The mayor of Sfântu Gheorghe, Antal Arpad Andras, declared on Saturday, 13 December, from the tribune of The Unional Representatives Council of The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (DAHR, UDMR in Romanian) at Târgu Mureș, that if the prime minister Victor Ponta will not ”instruct” the Covasna county prefect “to leave the Hungarians alone”, then in the so-called szekely region in Romania could happen the same as in march 1990 at Târgu Mureș, cites Agerpres.

”I am asking mister Frunda to ask his chief, the prime minister of Romania, to instruct the Covasna county prefect to leave the Hungarians alone. What the prefects do, qualifies himself also. (…) or else, in the szekely region could happen what happened in march 1990 at Târgu Mureș” said Antal Arpad, according to the official translation.

In March 1990 in Târgu Mureș a violent ethinc conflict erupted between Romanians and ethnic Hungarians (details here). A few years ago Antal Arpad said that Romanians in the so-called szekely regions could face the same destiny as ethnic Serbs in Kosovo if the Hungarians in Romania are not granted teritorial authonomy by the Romanian government (audio file here).
